Greater Iowa City, Inc., with support from the Community Foundation of Johnson County (CFJC), is moving into the next phase of Strategic Investment District (STRID) planning following a series of open house and charrette sessions.

The STRID initiative aligns with the Better Together 2030 All-In Vision, a regional framework focused on equity, resilience and connectivity across Johnson County.

With CFJC’s recent investment, the next phase includes Refinement Sessions that bring together local leaders, subject matter experts and community advocates to strengthen plans for three priority areas: North Liberty’s Cherry Street District, Coralville’s 5th Street District and South Iowa City’s Sycamore District.

“At the Community Foundation of Johnson County, we invest in long-term solutions that improve quality of life for everyone in Johnson County,” said Shelly Maharry, president and CEO of CFJC, in a release. “The STRID initiative reflects our values of intentional investment, equity, access, and community voice. This is how we shape the future, together.”

The STRID model focuses on place-based development, integrating housing, transportation, childcare, economic mobility and public space. Each district plan is intended to reflect the character of its area while supporting inclusive growth. The three districts were selected for their potential “to deliver measurable, community-driven impact,” the release stated.

“Place matters in economic development,” said Nancy Bird, president of Greater Iowa City, Inc. “These districts allow us to align local priorities with targeted investments that support working families, small businesses, and vibrant neighborhoods. The STRID model builds on the strength of each community and helps design spaces where people and businesses can thrive.”

Initial planning sessions, sponsored by MidwestOne Bank, GreenState Credit Union and Hills Bank, included input from more than 45 local professionals and advocates.

    District Overviews:

Cherry Street District (North Liberty): A civic and residential corridor with potential for new housing, expanded services and shared public space. Plans focus on placemaking and creating a central community hub.

5th Street District (Coralville): A walkable and historic area with opportunities for infill development, placemaking and support for local businesses and amenities. The plan aims to revitalize this historic area and connect neighbors with services they need for a thriving neighborhood.

Sycamore District (South Iowa City): A diverse area serving working families and service providers. Priorities include transit access, affordable childcare and housing, along with neighborhood entertainment and services.

Refinement Sessions are designed to ensure that plans address real community needs, incorporating perspectives from professionals in housing, transportation, food systems, childcare and accessibility. The sessions emphasize equity, walkability, affordability and sustainability.

The STRID initiative is part of Greater Iowa City’s broader efforts in regional, place-based economic development, with ongoing community collaboration and CFJC’s investment driving the work forward, the release stated.
