The building that served as the former home of The Bohemian restaurant in the NewBo neighborhood of Cedar Rapids has been sold.

The Matyk building, at 1029 Third St. SE, sold for $250,000 in a transaction recorded Feb. 24 by the Cedar Rapids assessor’s office.

The buyer, listed as “NH Florida 1 LLC,” is a Florida-based business entity of brothers Kevin and Kory Nanke, who own and operate several restaurants in Cedar Rapids, including Midtown Station, Midtown Reserve and Czech Town Station.

A holding company registered to Kory Nanke also purchased the former Sykora Bakery building at 73 16th Ave. SW in Czech Village for $290,000 in December 2023.

The former Bohemian, the Matyk building’s most recent occupant, opened with considerable fanfare in March 2021 under then-owner Mike Richards, featuring an array of art, artifacts, antique furniture and stained glass windows.

It closed in September 2022 shortly after staff members quit, citing unpaid wages, The Gazette reported. It went on the market in January 2023 for $990,000.

The Matyk building, built by Czechoslovakian immigrants, opened as a restaurant in 1893, and an addition was added in 1957. The building has housed several entities over its history, including a dry goods store and, more recently, a short-lived coffee shop.
