Fong’s Pizza is permanently closing its Cedar Rapids location in the NewBo neighborhood Nov. 5. “Cedar Rapids we want to thank you for your support over the years,” the restaurant posted on its Facebook page Oct. 27. “It is with heavy hearts we are saying our goodbyes and closing permanently at the end of the day on 11/5/22. We love serving this great community. Unfortunately, our lease is at its end, and with the uncertain future of the economy, it did not make sense for us to renew at this time. “We look forward to spending our last days with you.” Fong’s Pizza, a longtime staple in Des Moines known for its eclectic pizza menu, opened its Cedar Rapids location in May 2018 at 1006 Third St. SE, a building that had been previously occupied by Betas restaurant (formerly Bata’s), which closed at the end of 2017. It was named the Corridor Business Journal’s “Best New Restaurant” shortly after its opening. With the catchphrase “Tiki Drinks. Serious Pizza,” Fong’s crab rangoon pizza is among its best-selling offerings. Other unusual items include the Polynesian, Thai Chicken and Coconut Curry pizzas, as well as more mainstream fare such as mac and cheese pizza and “The Iowan.” “Thanks for bringing something unique to CR and being an active community partner!” one commenter wrote on Facebook in response to the restaurant's announcement. Fong's continues to operate locations in Des Moines and Ankeny.
