A dual-brand, four-story hotel and accompanying retail space could be in development soon in Coralville north of I-80 by Thiesen's Home Farm Auto. JD Royal Hospitality COO John Crump told the CBJ he hopes to break ground in March but there is not an exact timeline yet. The 65,028-square-feet, 139-room building will be home to Avid and Candlewood, two hotel brands owned by InterContinental Hotels Group. Rooms will be split approximately even between Avid and Candlewood, as they will have 71 rooms and 68 rooms respectively. It's expected the building will employ 15 full-time and 10 part-time employees. The development will include a 3,600-square-feet strip center retail space west of the hotel. Mr. Crump hopes a national chain, such as Starbucks or Panera, will occupy one of the four tenant openings. "This will be our first property in the city of Coralville," he said. "We think this is a good area with a lot of development going on." Coralville City Council approved first consideration Jan. 24 to rezone the property the hotel will sit on Jan. 24, an initial step required to begin construction within Westcor Business Park. JD Royal Hospitality, based in Bettendorf, operates other properties in Iowa, Wisconsin and Texas.
