Downtown IC block party enjoyed by thousands

After a break in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Iowa City Downtown District hosted its Downtown Block Party on July 24 with more than 28,000 in attendance, according to event organizers.

The fourth annual block party encompassed 14 downtown blocks and included live music, a silent disco, the Blitz chess tournament, the Studio 13’s drag show and more.

“It was another great event. This year we introduced some new programming elements with key partners from our community and they were all a huge hit. The Blitz Chess Tournament had over 200 players participate, it was so much fun,” said Betsy Potter, director of creative services.

Attendees also enjoyed food and drinks from downtown restaurants and bars as they set up special stations directly outside their businesses with quick-serve items and menus.  In addition to the economic impact for the downtown businesses, the event was fueled by community volunteers from various service organizations, charities, and non-profits with over $20,000 donated to the participating partners and groups.

“Our mission with this event is always to make sure it feels inclusive and fun for anyone and everyone. This year the footprint was expanded and it really helped create more space for people to wander and discover more of the unique programming,” said Ms. Potter.
