Design Engineers, a Cedar Rapids-based mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology (MEPT) engineering firm, has opened a new office in Ankeny, expanding its presence in the Greater Des Moines metro area.
The Ankeny location marks Design Engineers’ third office and is part of a broader strategy to strengthen ties with clients throughout Iowa and the Midwest. The new office will be led by Adam Bunnell, P.E., associate principal and senior mechanical engineer, who has been with the company for nearly two decades.
“We’ve seen incredible growth at DE over the past several years, and one of the themes we’ve embraced is to ‘grow and do better,’” Mr. Bunnell said in a release. “Establishing a dedicated presence in central Iowa allows us to further enable our client architects and building owners to do great things.”
Mr. Bunnell said Design Engineeers chose Ankeny for its new office, in part, to attract talent from nearby Iowa State University and to position itself between the university and many of its architectural partners in downtown Des Moines.
Founded in 1983, Design Engineers has been headquartered in Cedar Rapids throughout its history. The firm played a prominent role in the city’s post-disaster recovery following the 2008 floods and the 2020 derecho, contributing to projects such as the Cedar Rapids Public Library, Greene Square Park, the African American Museum of Iowa and the Ellis Golf Course clubhouse.
Its recent project portfolio includes the Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust building, the Prairie Hill YMCA, Mercy’s Marion Emergency Department, and multiple school facilities across Linn County. Design Engineers is also known for its focus on sustainable building systems, including its work on the Indian Creek Nature Center, Iowa’s only Living Building Challenge Petal Certified project.
