A new independent bookstore embracing gothic and “witchy” themes will open Sept. 9 in Czech Village.
Sisters Books & Nooks, founded by Jamie Sharar and Sarah Danielson, will focus on romantasy, horror, thrillers, mystery, fantasy, banned books and LGBTQIA+ voices. The store will also feature local authors and area artists who might not otherwise have a storefront.
The bookstore will offer self-serve coffee and tea, with wine service planned for the future.
“We wanted to create a place where people can hang out, decompress and find community, not just buy a book and leave,” co-owner Jamie Sharar said in a news release. “Especially with the political climate right now, members of marginalized groups especially need places where they are comfortable and safe to be themselves. We are unapologetic about our inclusive beliefs and our merchandise reflects that.”
Co-owner Sarah Danielson said the owners chose not to play it safe with their business approach.
“It’s tempting to play it safe when you open a business in Iowa, but we want to do the opposite,” Ms. Danielson said. “The store has a very lived-in vibe—the decor and furniture are mostly thrifted and vintage. We have cozy touches like a fireplace, candelabra sconces and plush chairs. We want you to relax your shoulders when you walk in the front door.”
Sharar and Danielson met as veterinary technicians in 2012 and bonded over their mutual love for the macabre. Their friendship deepened through dance classes, and they began brainstorming business ideas. The bookstore provides both a creative outlet and an opportunity to try entrepreneurship.
“We’re excited to be in the Czech Village since it’s a tight, eclectic community,” Ms. Danielson said. “We’re looking forward to holding events, from author appearances and book clubs to trivia nights, craft activities and cabaret performances.”
“We are your colorful, cishet, childless aunties who swear and fight the patriarchy while offering you a shot of whiskey or espresso in solidarity,” Ms. Sharar said. “Sisters can’t wait to help you escape your worries by finding your next favorite book.”
The store, located at 1612 C St. SW, Suite A, will be open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
