Dealing with a pandemic as well as a derecho that significantly damaged its facilities, IT and communication infrastructure, UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital has continued to provide top-notch health care, add services and make plans for the future. “We could not be prouder or more grateful for our team members – they truly are health care heroes,” said President and CEO Michelle Niermann. In 2020, St. Luke’s saw a few firsts for heart care in Cedar Rapids, including a minimally invasive mitral valve repair, a treatment for advanced coronary atherosclerosis, and an implant to help reduce stroke risk in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. While year-to-date operating losses were considerable before the recognition of stimulus funds, UnityPoint Health has been intentional in ensuring its health system remains well-positioned for the future, Ms. Niermann said. “We started a $14 million inpatient modernization project this spring on our third floor that will result in a greatly improved environment of care for our patients,” she said. “This project will completely replace our current medical and surgical inpatient units, which were built in the 1950s and ’60s.” When complete, the hospital’s third floor will have larger rooms, private bathrooms, bariatric rooms, additional negative pressure rooms and advanced technology. The project, as well as a new UnityPoint Clinic – Tower Terrace in Marion, is expected to be completed by next summer. 1st Runner Up: University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics 2nd Runner Up: Mercy Medical Center
