What was your first job? Preschool gymnastics coach Who do you consider your local mentors? Patti Kunz, director of philanthropy, Mercy Medical Center Foundation. In my current role as President of Metro North Rotary, Patti has been an excellent resource for advice, historical knowledge of the club, and new ideas. I like to say Patti is the “life” of our club. Her leadership and continuous commitment to make this community (and world) a better place, all while having fun, is something we should all emulate. Best advice you ever received? The best way to grow is to continuously step outside of your comfort zone. What do you consider your "big break" in your career, so far? Becoming a Commercial Relationship Manager at Bankers Trust. I spent several years in commercial underwriting, mostly “behind the scenes." Although I love analyzing numbers, I am a people person at heart, and it has been extremely fulfilling building relationships with customers, business professionals, and nonprofit employees and volunteers in our community.
What would most people be surprised to learn about you? I spent most of my childhood as a competitive gymnast. I attribute a lot of my work ethic to the sport. Gymnastics is a fun way to constantly push yourself physically and mentally.
What’s the biggest issue facing the Corridor, and why? Higher prices caused by inflation have taken a toll on households and businesses in the community. As a result, it is getting harder to fundraise for local nonprofits. The Corridor is lucky to have an abundance of excellent nonprofits that address the needs of the community, but these nonprofits need to be adequately funded to succeed.
If you had $1 million to give, what causes would you support? American Heart Association or American Cancer Society. Both causes are dear to my heart as I’ve had several family members impacted by heart disease and/or cancer, including a close friend who passed away at the age of 21 from Neuroendocrine Carcinoma. What do you want to accomplish by the time you are 50? I want to be able to look back and see a tangible impact I made for my company or my community. As a member of the Junior League of Cedar Rapids, I’ve been inspired by the projects that were created by JLCR and still exist to this day (such as Leadership for Five Seasons and Waypoint’s Madge Phillips Center). It would be amazing to be part of a group that creates a new idea to address a need in our community, and then bring the idea to life.
What are your passions outside of the workplace? Cheering on the Hawks, golfing, and spending time with friends and family.
