What do you consider your “big break” in your career, so far? Opening Thompson & Co. in 2015 was a major milestone for me — my “big break.” Over the past 9 1/2 years, our salon has achieved many great things, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our team, my husband and myself. With 17 years as a cosmetologist, I believe that the early steps I took and my willingness to embrace new challenges was key to reaching this pivotal point in my career.
What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace? My generation straddles two significant eras — the pre-digital and the digital age. This gives us a unique position that has shaped our approach to learning and growth. While formal education was emphasized in our upbringing, the rapid technological changes we’ve witnessed throughout our lives have instilled a strong desire for continuous learning and adaptability. Because of this, we’re comfortable seeking out new knowledge in a variety of ways, whether through traditional methods or modern platforms like online courses, webinars, podcasts, or hands-on experiences.
What’s the biggest issue facing the Corridor, and why? One of the major issues facing the Corridor is the rising cost of homes. For young adults, investing in property is a crucial step towards securing their financial future. However, the increasing home prices and higher interest rates are making it nearly impossible for many professionals and families to afford homeownership on their own. This challenge creates a need for innovative solutions to improve housing accessibility and affordability in our area.
Best advice you ever received? The best advice that I have received so far is “the more you give, the more you receive.” I have found that in business and in life, generosity and kindness can lead to great things. It has helped me build strong relationships, give and receive help in times of need, and creates a sense of fulfillment and happiness that I believe we all seek in life.
