Learn about Cedar Rapids downtown history during architectural walking tour

The Iowa Architectural Foundation (IAF) will present an architectural walking tour of downtown Cedar Rapids on July 22.

Led by local historian Mark Stoffer Hunterr, the walking tour will allow residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the history and architectural heritage of Cedar Rapids.

On Saturday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m., history enthusiasts and architecture aficionados are invited to gather outside the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art to embark on a journey through the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Stoffer Hunter, an expert in local history, will guide participants through a tapestry of stories, anecdotes, and architectural marvels that have shaped the city’s past and present. Participants will learn about architectural detail, style and elements, with stories and the historical significance of the buildings.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Mark Stoffer Hunter for this walking tour,” said Laura Porter, executive director of the Iowa Architectural Foundation, in a news release. “We aim to celebrate the unique heritage of downtown Cedar Rapids, while also fostering a sense of community and appreciation for architecture.”

A native of Cedar Rapids, Mr. Stoffer Hunter brings 25 years of experience in local history education to his guided walks.

The tour will highlight landmarks such as the historic First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids Savings (Guaranty) Bank, Federal Courthouse & Post Office, and views of the  Veterans Memorial Building and Linn County Courthouse.

Check-in opens at 10 a.m. outside the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, located at 424 Third Ave. SE. Tours take off promptly at 10:30 a.m. Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended.
