Greater Iowa City, Inc., in partnership with the Community Foundation of Johnson County and South of 6, has announced the launch of the ARPA-funded Underestimated Small Business Grant initiative.

According to a news release, this program offers an opportunity for underestimated small businesses in Johnson County to access grants ranging from $3,500 to $20,000.

“We want to ensure that the small business owners who have been traditionally underrepresented have an opportunity to get the support they need. This grant helps them rebuild and move forward stronger,” said Maurice Davis, executive director of the South of 6 Business District, in the release.

Johnson County awarded $500,000 of their federal ARPA funding toward the collaborative program, the release states, which will be distributed across three rounds of applications over the next year. The first application round opens on Jan. 1, 2025, and closes on Jan. 31, 2025, with the initial distribution of funds anticipated in spring 2025.

There are two grant categories that small businesses can apply for. The first is operational support, which covers essential costs such as payroll, rent, and utilities. The second is storefront improvements, which would fund façade updates, interior renovations, or accessibility upgrades.

Information sessions have been scheduled during January:

During these sessions, applicants will receive hands-on assistance with the application process using laptop computers provided on-site, according to the release. Childcare services, bus passes, and stipends for time spent in application clinics will also be provided to ensure accessibility.

“This grant opportunity exemplifies the strength of collaboration. We are proud to partner with South of 6 and the Community Foundation of Johnson County to bring meaningful support to our small business community,” said Jesse Wallace, communications and marketing director for Greater Iowa City, Inc., in the release.
